CV tips

Covering Letter

The covering letter is an essential part of your application, as many clients place as much emphasis on this as the CV.

All letters should be addressed to a named person with their title if appropriate and it should have no spelling or grammatical mistakes. Try not to repeat what has been written in your CV and keep the letter meaningful.

Before writing the letter research the company and role you are applying for so you can be specific.

The CV

Presentation
A CV should be no more than three pages long. Make sure it is well presented and easy to read - use bullet points where possible. Avoid fancy fonts, overuse of graphics and coloured paper.

Personal Details
A CV should include full name, home and email addresses, home and mobile telephone numbers.

Personal Profile
When promoting yourself through your CV you will need to present yourself in terms of your skills, strengths, experience and knowledge. Illustrate skills gained from successful activities and highlight your communication, team working, problem solving and management skills - be objective and positive. Tailor your profile specifically to the role.

Education
Include name and dates of further education institutes you attended along with what subjects you took and grades achieved. Do not include secondary or primary school details.

Additional information
You might not think this area is important but it is an integral part of your CV.  You will need to include any Professional Institutes you are a member of; any relevant health and safety certificates held; identify your computer software skills and any languages you are au fait with.

Employment history
Present your employment history in reverse chronological order with your current employer first. Employment dates should be made clear and give month and year. Any gaps should be explained. Previous employer names should be correct and your position held within that company should be made clear. All job roles undertaken within one employer should be broken down with dates. Under your employer and your job role include a full brief of projects/ contracts worked on including values, location and duration.  To end with, include your actual duties and responsibilities encompassing any achievements.

Hobbies and interests
This paragraph will help prospective employers with their assessment of you as an individual. Include any charity and voluntary work you undertake plus any social activities you might feel relevant to the industry/client/job role.

This should be kept as concise as possible.

References
Two professional references with official titles and contact details should be included.
